Human rights for all couples
Oct. 3rd, 2006 03:00 pm"Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?"

We would like to know who really believes in gay rights on livejournal. There is no bribe of a miracle or anything like that. If you truly believe in gay rights, then repost this and title the post as "Gay Rights". If you don't believe in gay rights, then just ignore this. Thanks.

Posted because I support what I think whoever started this was meaning to say. I will say, however, that I don't believe in "gay rights." I believe in human rights, including the right to marry whom you choose, to do an honest day's work for an honest day's pay, to live where you choose, to worship how and where you choose. To call those rights "gay rights" IMHO caters to those who think same-sex couples are asking for something special, something more. When most of the gay couples I know would rather be treated just like everyone else.
This bit mine:
In addition, this is an auspicious day for this to come up. Here in Ireland, there is a court case (Maman Poulet has the best commentary and links that I can find) that is challengning the Revenue Commissioner's non-recognition (our equiv of the IRS) of a Canadian marriage between two women. Says Suzy:
The case will explore the validity of lesbian and gay relationships, the special status given to heterosexual marriages and the many ways in which lesbian and gay citizens are discriminated against in the provision of benefits, goods and services by the state and other bodies simply because we love people of the same sex.
And she's right. We have many friends who are same sex couples, who have been together almost as long as B and I have, yet they have no recognition at all of their partnership. And that's just ludicrous, in my mind.
