What hell that was!!
We started on Friday...a nice, foggy Friday. The small airport where we were going to fly to Boston from needed at least 1/2 mile visibility before letting planes land. We didn't even have that! So the 2p flight was cancelled at 1:30. Our flight from Boston was at 7, so me, DH, P, Mom and StepDad dove in our car, and started booking it down to Boston. DH had the brilliant idea of seeing if there was a flight to Boston from Portland (only an hour away...Boston was 4 hour drive). There was. Great, booked us on it.
Get to the airport in a rush, check in (4 boxes (2 were 46 lbs each!) and a backpack with 2 cast iron skillets in it!), and get in the line for security. Get pulled aside for "special screening". Goody. With P squirming and not liking the people doing the extra screening. We get through with no problems, and then we sit. And wait. And wait. The flight that was to leave at 4:20p got pushed back to 5p. Then, when we finally got on it, it left at 6:15p. We landed in Boston at 6:48, got off the plane at 6:52, and realized there was no way we could run to the other terminal to make the flight. So we had Delta call them (and I was getting ready to take off Delta's head, since they were saying it was weather related delays and not mechanical...it was a different airplane!) and they tried to get us on a flight later that night.
We couldn't do that flight, cause that meant changing planes in Shannon (a silly airport in the west of Ireland that annoys almost everyone cause 50% of the flights to Dublin have to stop there), and there wouldn't be special meals for me and P. So we got a hotel room, and booked ourselves on the Sunday flight (we were told the Sat flight was fully booked). We finally ate at 9:30, and hit the bed at 10:15. Then I remembered that we had a Tesco grocery order that was going to be delivered on Sat at 1:30! Eep! And the website wasn't letting us change or cancel the order (stupid SQL crud). So we emailed our friend up the road, seeing if they could be at the house for the order. Then back to bed.
Next day, I call Aer Lingus on a whim, and we were able to get on the flight on Saturday, with special meals. No change (but a stop) in Shannon. SCORE! So we went to the Children's Museum in Boston for a while, to let P exhaust himself.
Flight left at 7. P was beyond exhausted, and fell asleep about 20 minutes after takeoff. I ate the meal, and tried to sleep. DH was in the row behind us, watching a movie. P only woke up once, to nurse, and fell asleep on me and he and I slept like that til 15 minutes outside Shannon. Then he played quietly til we got to Dublin. Met our friends, they gave us our lift home, and all was good.
Even better, my friend and I ran to Tesco to get some groceries. I told the desk there what had happened the day before (friend didn't get email in time, delivery was attempted), and the delivery guy came out and said that he thought our order was still in the fridge...and it was!! I didn't even have to shop! Phew!
So now we're almost unpacked (8 bags of chocolate chips!!), I'm catching up when I can, and trying to remember where everything goes :-).
It was hellish, a bit, but not bad overall. At least there wasn't anyone in customs in Dublin, or we'd be in *trouble*. Brought back 4 250 gig HD for friends :-).
