Okay, I need to know. According to this NYTimes article (might need reg, not sure), "Since Aug. 10, when a ban on most carry-on liquids sent the amount of checked luggage soaring, airlines have been misplacing many more bags, and the fumbling could well escalate during the busy holiday travel season."

HUH?! Why on earth are the liquids making such a difference? I'm truly confused here. The only real liquids I take with us are drinks in Nalgene bottles. Everything else is packed. What liquids do people bring on the planes? I honestly do not get it.

Someone, fill me in.

Cosmetics and toiletries mainly (perfume, moisturiser, toothpaste etc).

But it means that more bags are now being checked that were previously brought as carry-on.

But, see, all that crap goes in my checked luggage. Why would anyone want to carry it on? I'm thinking more about the US, where they *don't* charge you for checked luggage (what a freaking concept, so pissed off at AerLingus about that).

because if you're going on a trip overnight somewhere and don't want to check a bag (due to hassles checking/claiming, fear of theft, luggage loss, etc) those toiletries would end up in your carryon.

Okay, that I can see. I was thinking long haul flights.

My skin gets dehydrated on a 2 hour flight - going to and from the US I would have been like a prune without having a moisturiser with me. I usually carry a toothbrush and paste with me too.

the moisturizer I get. Toothbrush and toothpaste tho?! Really? I would never think of bringing that on the plane with me. Even now.

Some of us do our best to never check luggage. :)

Yes, I'm getting htat. I realize that most of my flights these days are over 5 hours, so that's what I've been thinking. Forgetting about little jumps, etc.

I have never taken liquids aboard a plane. I would never consider taking shampoo on a flight. I've been confused by that one for a long time.

Most travellers are business travellers. They don't check luggage, they carry everything they'll need for a day or two in their carry-on bags. Except that with the ban, they've been checking them instead, to avoid the security hassles. Neil Gaiman (who hadn't checked a bag since Northwestern lost the only suit he's ever loved) had a fair amount of chat about this in his blog, as he worked to assemble an all-solid toiletries kit.

Ahhh...see, I get the business travelers thing. But all the pics on tv were always families, which I didn't get. Wouldn't you want to NOT carry all that crap if you have kids with you?

And now I understand why tagging is good, after digging through NG's blog :-)

Most travellers don't check anything. I used to be one of them before I had kids!

Maybe I've been doing too much international flying, but I don't want to haul any extra crap on the plane with me. I've always been like that...I think my mother is to blame. She routinely gets on a plane with just a paperback.
