Wait...liquids?

schmoomomOkay, I need to know. According to this NYTimes article (might need reg, not sure), "Since Aug. 10, when a ban on most carry-on liquids sent the amount of checked luggage soaring, airlines have been misplacing many more bags, and the fumbling could well escalate during the busy holiday travel season."
HUH?! Why on earth are the liquids making such a difference? I'm truly confused here. The only real liquids I take with us are drinks in Nalgene bottles. Everything else is packed. What liquids do people bring on the planes? I honestly do not get it.
