Crochet help

schmoomomI'm looking online and cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it...
I can make the starting chain no problem...but how do I create the next line of crochet? I see the "put the hook through the starting chain" thing, but I seem to not be able to do it right, and it all ends up look like a big knot.
